Peter Pomerantsev comes to Chisinau: an event about manipulation and information warfare

Chisinau will host an exceptional meeting with journalist and researcher Peter Pomerantsev, organized by Cartier Publishing House, on Sunday, January 26, at 15:00. The event will take place at the “Luceafărul” Theater (7 Veronica Micle Street) and will bring to the fore themes such as information manipulation, modern propaganda and their impact on society.

In an age where the truth seems just a few clicks away, reality is more complicated than it seems. Algorithms, trolls and bots contribute to misinformation, and the question “How do we remain immune to manipulation?” is becoming more and more topical. Peter Pomerantsev, author of the volumes “Adventures in Today’s Russia. Nothing is true and everything is possible” and “How to win an information war”, will address these topics in a dialogue with Mihail Sirkeli.

His books, also translated into Romanian by Cartier Publishing House, offer a deep insight into the information war in the digital age. They are available to order online on cartier.md.

Born in Kiev, Pomerantsev personally experienced the effects of propaganda, his family being forced to take refuge in West Germany after his father was persecuted by the KGB. Later settled in Great Britain, Pomerantsev studied literature and worked for almost a decade in Moscow, in TV production. Today, she is an internationally recognized voice, publishing articles in The Atlantic, the Guardian and the London Review of Books.

The event is free of charge, but participation requires prior registration. The form is available HERE. The discussion will be in Russian, with translation into Romanian through headphones.

This meeting represents a unique opportunity to better understand the mechanisms of modern propaganda and to discover strategies to successfully navigate the informational complexity of today.

The Local Student Councils of Chisinau have set their priorities for 2025!

The presidents of the Local Students’ Councils in the sectors of the Chisinau municipality met to establish the priorities and directions of action for 2025. During the meeting, held under the aegis of the Chisinau Municipal Youth Center, emphasis was placed on collaboration, active involvement of students in the community and promotion of their initiatives.

The event was also attended by Petru Grecu, director of the Chisinau Municipal Youth Center, together with Victoria Grigorcea, coordinator of pupils and students, who offered support in the planning process and valuable perspectives on the future of students’ activities.

What are Student Councils?

Student Councils are an organizational structure through which students can express their opinions, initiate projects and actively contribute to the improvement of the educational environment. These councils operate on several levels:

  1. The School Council of Students (SCS): It is formed within each educational institution. SCS represents the school’s students, identifies their needs and promotes local initiatives, collaborating with the school administration for a better educational environment.
  2. Local Students’ Council (LSC): It brings together representatives of the school councils in a locality or sector. In Chisinau, each sector has its own LSC (Botanica, Buiucani, Centru, Ciocana, Râșcani). The LSC coordinates the activities of the school councils and promotes the interests of students at the local level.
  3. Municipal Council of Students (MCS): MCS represents students from all over Chisinau and brings together MCS leaders from all sectors. Established in 2020, MCS works with municipal authorities and youth organisations to support pupils’ initiatives.
  4. National Council of Students (NCS): It is the national structure that brings together representatives from all districts and municipalities, including Chisinau, which has 4 delegates. The NCS collaborates with the Ministry of Education and other institutions to promote students’ rights and their participation in the decision-making process.

In the autumn of 2024, according to the new regulation of the Student Councils, Local Student Councils were established in each sector of Chisinau municipality: Botanica, Buiucani, Centru, Ciocana and Riscani. These structures are an important platform for young people in each sector, giving them the opportunity to get involved in community projects, develop initiatives and collaborate with local authorities.

The role of Youth Centers

The Youth Centers in the municipality, together with the Municipal Students’ Council, play an essential role in supporting these structures. They contribute to creating an environment that encourages young people’s involvement and personal development. In 2025, the focus will be on developing projects that meet students’ needs and promoting their participation in decision-making.

This meeting marks a new beginning for young people in Chisinau, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and involvement in the life of the community. With the support of the Student Councils and Youth Centers, the students in the municipality have the chance to become leaders of their generation, actively contributing to the development of a better educational environment.

January 11, 2025 Horoscope: The Day the Universe Tests Your Patience (and Humor)

Today is one of those days when everything seems to make sense… until it is gone. But don’t panic, the stars are on your side (probably). Grab a coffee, relax and see what they have prepared for you:

  • Aries: Someone complicates your day, but you’re not willing to play in soap operas. Aries, stay away from drama and enjoy the simple things like a good meme or a serving of fries.
  • Taurus: Today money seems to fly faster than you can count it. Taurus, if you still like shopping, at least invest in something useful, like a fluffy blanket for binge-watching.
  • Gemini: You’re on the wave and you feel like you can move mountains… or at least finish all the episodes of your favorite series. Geminis are now champions at multitasking, but be careful not to mess up your plans!
  • Cancer: The past is knocking on your door, but you feel like ignoring it. Racule, fix what needs to be repaired, but don’t get caught up in memories like “how good it was when…”. The future sounds better!
  • Leo: You’re ready to be generous, but be careful not to empty your account. Leo, an outing with friends sounds good, but maybe you don’t have to pay the entire bill.
  • Virgo: Today you excel at organization, but it seems that love also wants to attract your attention. Virgo, use your strategic talents to impress – whether it’s a crush or someone special.
  • Libra: You’re in the mood for peace and harmony, but life has other plans for you. Libra, take a deep breath and think about that simple happiness that a hot chocolate brings you.
  • Scorpio: You feel like reconnecting your relationships, but with your enigmatic style. Scorpio, today is the perfect day to send that message you’ve been thinking about for a long time, but keep it short and mysterious.
  • Sagittarius: You suddenly wake up aware of your health. Sagittarius, maybe it’s time to exercise, even if it just means getting up from the couch for a glass of water.
  • Capricorn: Today you are the absolute boss, but be careful not to exaggerate with “I know better”. Capricorn, your ambition is to be admired, but the world doesn’t need you to prove it to them at every step.
  • Aquarius: Your ideas are so creative today that you’re almost scared. Aquarius, take advantage of this wave of inspiration – maybe you invent something brilliant or, at least, a new kind of sandwich.
  • Pisces: Your intuition is so strong today that you can almost predict which episode is coming up in your favorite series. Pisces, listen to your instincts and let yourself be guided by them in everything you do.

Conclusion: January 11 comes with a mix of surprises and small challenges. Don’t take yourself too seriously, joke, relax and let the universe do its job!
